SUTHERLAND DANIEL was the son of Alexander and Catherine Campbell Sutherland (his second wife), who came to Prince Edward Island from Scotland . Alexander, from the Parish of Farr, and Katherine from Caithnesshire. Captain Dan had two brothers [Dr.] John and George. Captain Dan inherited the Sutherland farm after his brother George died. Capt. Daniel and his wife Margaretta, deeded the barn, buildings, house and one-quarter acre of land to Capt. Dan 's mother, Catherine, in 1891. In 1895 Catherine Sutherland evidently had no further need for this property and gave it back to Capt. Dan . The Ernest MacEwen family later lived in the home. Capt. Dan was well known for the loads of coal he transported to the , Stanley Bridge , from . On Feb. 18, 1903, Capt. Dan purchased % acre of land from Sarah MacMillan for a warehouse. This was located between the Patrick Walsh and W.T. Weir prop¬ erties above the present bridge. The wharf was located close to the present . He received permission from the Government for this site on March 8, 1910. The last boat oper¬ ated by Capt. Dan , was called the Ripply Ropes. The Sutherland farm on the East side of the river was passed from the Sutherland family to Dan and Margaret's nephew, Ernest MacEwen and his family. DANIEL SUTHERLAND [Captain] m. Feb. 3, 1890 to MARGARETTA ELIZA (1860 1945), the eldest child of William and Jane Montgomery McEwen of the . They had no children but brought up Margaret's nephew, Ernest MacEwen , after his mother died. Capt. Dan and Maggie had built a new home on the West side of the river in the early 1900's. This land was part of the original Robert Fyfe property, {see ) MacEWEN ERNEST SUTHERLAND McEWEN (Dec. 15, 1902 - Mar. 6, 1987), son of Joseph and Victoria Simpson McEwen , of Campbellton , lived with his aunt and uncle, Capt. Dan and Margaret Sutherland after his mother died. Ernest m. Mar. 1923 to Euphemia (Phemie) McKenzie (May 5, 1902 - Feb. 18, 1984), daugh¬ ter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. McKenzie , South Granville . In 1925 Ernest and Euphemia MacEwen purchased 90 acres of land on the from James and William Miller. In 1945, they sold the property on the east side of the river, and moved across the bridge to Capt. Sutherland 's home on the 'top of the hill'. They lived here until they retired to Kensington in 1948. After Margaretta's [Maggie's] death the property went to Euphemia and Walter MacEwen (1945) who sold it to Thomas and Anita Gallant in 1954. Today the house has been placed on a new site, increased in size, and been turned into a building for furniture manufacturing. It is known as the Furniture Company. Ernest and Phemie had five children: 1. Vivian b. Apr. 13, 1924 m. July 26, 1948 to Ronald Rennehan d. 1997. The family lives in Halifax, NS. 2. Anna b. Apr. 20, 1925 m. Nov. 16, 1963 to Blaine Moreside and they live in Charlottetown . 3. D. Sutherland "Dan" b. July 25, 1926 m. Nov. 7, 1953 to Doris Han d. 1996. The family lives in the Toronto , ON area 384
