BARRY

One of the first settlers in Hope River was JOHN BARRY from Waterford, Ireland. He was a farmer and a blacksmith. He farmed 50 acres in Lot 22. John Barry leased the 50 acres that extended from the west branch of Hope River south towards the New London Road from pro- prietor Sir Lawrence Sullivan in 1840. John Dickieson purchased this property in 1874. The 1861 census says John and Mrs. Barry had two daughters and one son.

BOWLAN

The Bowlan name came to Lot 22, through JAMES BOWLAN and MARY KELLY, who are believed to have emigrated from County Cork, Ireland. They farmed on land leased to them

from proprietor, Sir Lawrence Sullivan. They resided on Grady Road and they had property on the North Road too. An early map shows that James Bowlan had 25 acres on the Hope River

Road as well. James and Mary had three sons.

1. WILLIAM (1829 Dec. 11, 1899) m. 1855 to MARY ELLEN SULLIVAN (1832 Nov. 23, 1874) William lived and farmed on land adjacent to Patrick Reid’s property on the Hope River Road. William and Mary had no children.

Mary is the daughter of William and Mary Sullivan, who lived on the Simpson Mill

Road. 2. JOHN b. Dec. 25, 1862 m. ELLEN . John and Ellen lived on the homestead

property on the Grady Road. 3. JAMES Jr. (1832-1901) m. 1857 to MARY ANNE HARRINGTON (1833—1908). James Jr. was a blacksmith and lived on 7.5 acres of land on the Simpson Mill

Road. (near Turners) James Jr. and Mary Anne had seven children: Rebecca Jane, James A., Mary Maud (1864—1886), Patrick, William Wallace, John Theodore,

Robert Emmett.

William Wallace m. Ellen Canning. William and Ellen went to live in Brownsville, Maine. They had three children: John James, Laura, Ola.

John James m. Rose Peters. John James was born in Brownsville, Maine, but came back to Emerald to attend school. Here he lived with his grandparents, John Andrew and Elizabeth Canning. Around 1911 he went to work with the railroad and never returned to Maine. John James and Rose had ten children: Walter Maurice, (Bowlan’s Radio and TV), Victor, John,

Theresa, Reta, Marie, Bernice, Earle, Louis and Harold.

Walter Maurice (1922-1996) m. Barbara Posher. They had seven children: Eric, Deborah Gail, Paul Walter, Dianne, Christine, John, Heather Anne.

FLEMING

PATRICK FLEMING (c. l791—Nov. 21, 1881) m. ELIZABETH VINCENT (c. 1798-?)

The Fleming name came to Lot 22, PEI, when Patrick emigrated from Wexford, Ireland in 1816 and settled on land on the lower Hope River Road. Patrick had a lease of fifty acres of land on the south branch of Hope River and another fifty acres on the Graveyard Hill. Patrick is one of the first settlers of the Mission Church of St. Ann’s. His home was used for Mass prior to Patrick donating land for the first church in Hope River. Shortly after his arrival, he married Elizabeth Vincent who came from the New London area. They had three children:
