And so she did! And what happened is she went right across the creek and buried herself, over half the length of her, into the earth. Eventually they got her out, and the captain put her on sail, and they went for a sail and they discovered that when she got away from them, she put a

twist in the keel. The only thing they could plan out why that ship was so fast was that curve on the keel”.

“Fastest ship in the world at that time. The Marco Polo was really something. You know she was loaded with lumber, yes hard pine. She had pieces 16x16x30 ft. in length in hard pine. The ship had had her day she was done, and they should never have put on such lumber. When we found the Marco Polo, one of my divers was going around the front of the wreck and he came back to me and he said ‘My God! Do you know what I see? There’s a chain all around this hull. And it’s embedded right into the old plank and it goes right around the whole thing’.”

“My father was eight years of age, when the Marco Polo went down, and he came up there with his father. And this is why I found the Marco Polo really, because he always told me I was fish— ing on the Marco Polo. Of course I always laughed at him. You would never think of a ship that close to land. But sure enough...”

“I’d like to tell you how I found the Marco Polo. It was a lovely morning, it was calm and a beautifully clear morning. My brother, Francis, was fishing with me and we were late getting up as usual, eight o’clock, sailing down the water, relaxed, and I was looking overboard and I said to my brother, Francis, ‘My heaven look at the lovely lobster!’ You could see the bottom and you could see the lobster crawling in every direction. Then I saw a great big cod coming along, then I see a flat fish near the top of the water and the big codfish chasing him. I was thinking Good God! You can see everything here today! So we’re sailing down, my traps were way down off Cavendish, so I didn’t have to look for them for I was on my way down there. I got down right near where my lobster traps are located, and I’m looking still, I see the rock coming, I set my traps on rock of course, and I see the rock coming boy, it’s showing up, I can see everything on the bottom. Beautiful. So I get down where the Marco P010 is, I cross over some sand not a rock on the head, I see a huge big thing. I said, Holy God, what’s this? I sailed right over the Marco Polo. I was stunned. I said Holy Jeez its the Marco Polo!!! Right there. Under twenty-six feet of water.”

“When I took the diver down the first time, he gave me an awful hard time. He said “You’ve got to be stupid. Any man said he saw a ship sitting in a boat...” He said, “You’re crazy!” I' said alright, you just wait till we get to her. We’re sailing down, he was giving me a helluva hard time. I said I’ll guarantee I’ll put you in the hull. He said, yeah, I know you will alright. So I kept at him. Get ready, get ready. Get your damn outfit on! And he’s jammin it all on, and gets all rigged up. Then he said, now where is it? I said wait ’til we get to it! We’re not to it yet. I know exactly because when I had found it, I lined up two trees off of Cavendish. And Hammie MacNeill’s woods. I said boy, I have news for him! We’re sailing along, and the trees are this far apart, they’re not lined up yet. I said to him get the anchor ready. What do you want the anchor for? I said, what the hell do you use an anchor for? You chuck it over and it books. He didn’t know I was going to hook it on one side of the Marco Polo. I was waiting so the trees got just about into line, and I told him to chuck that anchor. Well he chucked. And boy it came up alongside of the ship. I had her anchored solid. She was thirty—six feet wide, the Marco Polo. So my boat was right in the center of it. By this time, once the anchor hooked, I said to him, you go down there. He looked overboard and he said, there is nothing down there. And I’m looking right into the ship. I can see it the whole thing. She lays south-east and north—west. He jumped over and he went down, and he landed right in the middle of the hull. And Ohhh, brass pins, and every thing were just shining. He got so excited, he turned around and up he come and he pulled the mask off before he got out of the water, and he took some
