May lst, 1880, Pioneer, Montague: Panmure Island horses owned by McDonald crossed to Poxy Island and had to be rescued.
Aug. 3 ff., 1881, Patriot: Mass political meetings are held in the drill shed, Georgetown, with big-name political speakers: Edward Blake for the Liberal rally and Sir Leonard Tilley, later in the summer, for the
Conservatives.
Oct., 1881, Patriot: Capt. Dauncey, Lower Montague is killed in an accident on his own ship, the brigantine, Joseph. He was 45 and left a wife and family. There is a more detailed
story.
May 17(?), 1881, Presbyterian: J. Edward Head of Boughton Island, aged 27,» is drowned while
fishing (detailed story).
Jan. 5, 1882, Examiner has “Georgetown Notes” with an account of trials under the Canada Temperance Act.
May 23, 1884, Weekly Examiner: The collision of the Gloucester, Mass, ship Frank A Williams with the schooner Noonday off Panmure Island is reported. Many of the crew were Islanders.
Jan. 27, 1886, Weekly Examiner: A visiting minister to the Presbyterian Church, Georgetown, attempts to cross on the ice to conduct a service at Lower Montague, but turns back after poking his cane into the soft ice.
Mar. 12, 1886, Weekly Examiner: Georgetown Ice Carnival is described. Over fifty names and
costumes are listed.
Sept. 10, 1886, Weekly Examiner: Charles McNeill, Georgetown school teacher (from New Perth) loses life through drowning while swimming at the Railway Wharf. Also on the scene were Ewen Stewart, principal of the school, Stewart’s six year old son and 12 year old Willie McLaren. The story is told in detail in a letter to the Examiner by Stewart.
Sept. 30, 1887, Weekly Examiner: A Social is held and program repeated to aid in “fitting up a place of worship for the Baptists of Georgetown.”
Feb. 3, 1888, Weekly Examiner: The carnival is described with costumes and names of participants.
Mar. 23, 1888, Weekly Examiner: Public Meeting held re getting better service on the ferries. Wm. Sanderson chaired. F. Charles Iavers, the main mover.
July 5, 1889, Weekly Examiner: Georgetown School Closing; prizes, etc.
Sept. 27 & Oct. 4, 1889, Weekly Examiner: King’s County Exhibition, prizes, etc.
Nov. 29 & Dec. 6, 1889, Weekly Examiner: “King’s County Notes” describes the settlements
around Montague, including details about the building of the Catholic Church in Sturgeon.
Jan. 31, 1890, Weekly Examiner: Description is given of the trip of the Stanley through ice to Pictou.
