Foreword

This book offers a resource to persons pursuing genealogical research in the Georgetown, P.E.I. area. It is the result of my survey of Island newspapers from 1792 to 1950 likely to contain items about Georgetown families. Researchers will be aware that by no means all personal vital statistics were recorded in the papers. Most of those that were recorded for Georgetown in this period are to be found in local news columns and were submitted by regional reporters. Newspapers often found it difficult to secure such contributors, and those they did find were sometimes erratic in their reporting thus there are large gaps in the reportage. I have found errors in the original text and no dobbt researchers will find more. I do not make any claim, either, that my research is complete or always accurate. Items were often so scattered that some could easily have been missed in the scanning. Entries that are in quotes are directly from the papers; those indicated with a “From” are edited or rewritten to conserve space. Thus researchers will find additional information by looking up the item in the indicated newspaper for the date given. I wish to thank the personnel of the P.E.I. Public Archives and that of the Media Centre at the Roberston Library, University of Prince Edward Island for the use of their materials and their frequent helpfulness. My thanks also goes to my sister, Bea Mair, for her encouragement. She has included many of these items in Time and Tide, the community paper which she edits. My intention is to follow this publication with additional genealogical resources for the Georgetown area.
