D. “The death of John Lavers, Esq. of Georgetown, removed one of the best-known citizens of that town. Mr. Lavers was an active, energetic man and by his public spirit, industry and economy had a prominent place in the respect of his fellow-citizens. For over 20 years he was Collector of Local Assessments besides having a great deal to do with all the public affairs of the town. Since the passing of the Local Assessment Act he has been the deputy for receiving taxes for the Government and was also a JP. for King’s County. Mr. [avers contested the elections for Georgetown in the Liberal interest at a time when it was a thoroughly Conservative borough and although unsuccessful against such well-known public men as Hon. Dan Gordon and Arch. J. Macdonald, yet he received the full vote of the Liberal Party. He was always an active Liberal since Confederation and was chosen in conjunction with Dr. P. A. McIntyre, of Souris, to represent King’s County at the great Liberal Convention held in Ottawa in 1893. Mr. Lavers was very genial and hospitable in his own home and was known to hundreds of people in all parts of the County who had received kindness from him when they visited the county town. He was a member of the Anglican Church and for many years held the offices of Church Warden and Vestryman and although during the latteryears he had not taken so much interest in the work of the church, yet his contributions to all charitable projects were generous and unosterrtatious. He death at age 68 is greatly regretted and his funeral on the 22nd of February last a was one of the largest ever seen in Georgetown.
