He was a maker of seaman's boots, but later farmed and had a photographic studio. He was a elder of St. David's Church for over 40 years and superintendent of the Sunday School. He was married first to Janet Montgomery , by whom he had his family, and secondly to a widow, Mrs. Margaret Dingwell .
