1955:

D. At Georgetown, Jan. 14, 1955, in his 87th year, Captain J.J. Fitzgerald, whom the American Press in 1943 termed “the world’s gamest man.” He was born in Cape Breton but spent his young manhood in Georgetown, before moving to the United States as a mariner and eventually became a noted captain of sea— going vessels. He retired to his home in Georgetown. He leaves to mourn a son, Paul, in the United States and a daughter, Mary (Mrs. Ian Stirling), of Toronto. Also mourning are brothers: Captain Charles Fitzgerald of Georgetown and W.H. Fitzgerald of New York and sisters: Cassie (Mrs. Philip Quinn) of Boston and Mary of Georgetown. D. At Georgetown, Mar. 15, 1955, Henry C. Hemphill in his 75th year. He was a farmer and fisherman, the son of the late Edward and Nellie Hemphill and leaves to mourn brothers: Herbert in the USA. and Warren of the C.N.R., Charlottetown, and sisters, Elizabeth Fraser, Della (Mrs. Arthur Jones), Mass, Grace (Mrs. Richard Collings), Winnipeg, Sue, Mattie and Mary; also raised in the home, a grandson, Charles (Buster) Fraser, C.N.R. locomotive engineer, Georgetown. He was preceded by a sister, Georgie. Burial in St. David’s Cemetery. (Guardian, Mar. 16, 1955)

D. “At the Charlottetown Hospital, Apr. 6, 1955, Frank Solomon, of Georgetown aged 77 years.” He was Georgetown’s barber until his retirement and was active in town affairs, serving on the town council, the school board and was president of the Community Welfare Council at the time the rink was built. His wife Ada Batchilder predeceased him, also a daughter, Ann. Surviving are daughters: Ann (Mrs. Romie Ceredini), Agnes (Mrs. P. J. Henry), Freida (Mrs. Gerald

Morrison), Estelle (Mrs. C.P. Bolger), Summerside; and a son Walter, Georgetown. Burial in St. James Cemetery.

D. At Georgetown, May 9th, 1955, Chester H. Llewellyn. He was born in Sturgeon, June 12, 1887, and moved to Georgetown 1919. He was a lobster packer first as a partner in the firm of Graham and Llewellyn with a factory on Boughton Island until 1940 when he established C.H. Llewellyn & Sons in Georgetown which he continued until 1953. He served as a town councilor and was a. Liberal. He leaves to mourn his wife, formerly Lottie Blackett of Little Pond, sons: Emerson, Howard, Chester and James and daughters: Janie and Rose, R.N. Also surviving are brothers Earl, Sturgeon, Elmer. D. At his home in Georgetown, on May 19, 1955, William Maurice Donovan. He was born in Georgetown in 1875, the son of Mr. & Mrs. John Donovan. In 1891 he entered the Govemment Marine Service as a steward, serving on the C.G.S. Stanley, the C.G.S. Earl Grey and on the C.G.S Gill/tare as chief steward retiring in 1924. He then sold insurance until moving to Pictou in 1942 as caretaker of Sir William Dawson School, returning to Georgetown in 1952. Left to mourn are his wide, formerly Lily De Coste, a son, John, in Pictou, and

D. At her home in Georgetown, May 29th, 1955, Mrs. Frank Gotell, in her 65th year. She was born Christina Fitzpatrick, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Fitzpatrick, of Woodville Mills. She is survived by her husband and an adopted daughter, Mrs. Albert Burke; also brothers: Andrew, Louis and Maurice of Woodville, and sisters: Mary Coffin, Annie (Mrs. John Somers), Catherine (Mrs. William Christian) and Alice 0’ Donnell. D. At the Charlottetown Hospital, July 5, 1955, Josephine Marion Gotell, wife of John D. Gotell of Georgetown in her 47th year. She was born in Georgetown, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Batchilder. Besides her husband she leaves to mourn six sons: Frederick and Stephen both of the R.C.A.F., Carl, Jerome, Ralph, and Ronald at home and daughters: Joan and Elizabeth at home. Also surviving are her parents, six brothers: Lawrence, Bernard, Ferdinand, Walter Stephen and Leonard, and daughters, Mary (Mrs. Peter Jay), Ada (Mrs. Hedley MacNeill), Agnes (Mrs. Temple MacDonald) Janie and Catherine at home.
