1968:
D. “At Beach Grove, Jan. 9, 1968, Daniel MacDonald, formerly of St. George’s and Georgetown, in his 101st year.” He was born in Poplar Point, P.E.l., moved to Georgetown in 1947 and operated a blacksmith’s shop. He was twice-married, his second wife being Margaret MacAskill who predeceased him in 1962. B. “At the Charlottetown Hospital, on Jan. 17, 1968, to Mr. & Mrs. Paul Batchilder (nee Rosemary Rogers) of Georgetown, a daughter, Melissa Rae Ann. Weight 9 lbs., 11 ozs. A sister for Chris and Alana." (Guardian, Jan. 18, 1968)
D. At the Prince Edward Island Hospital, on Feb. 5th, John Charles Gotell, Georgetown, in his 75th year. He was the son of Henry Gotell and Sarah Batchilder and worked as a lobster fisherman and as caretaker of the Post Office Building in Georgetown, retiring in 1958. He served in World War 1. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary MacDonald, and by sons and a daughter: Agnes (Mrs. Charles Currie), Moncton, NB; Hughie of Charlottetown, Howard of Ontario and Wilfred of Georgetown. Also surviving are a sister Mrs. Mattie Hemphill, Pictou NS. and a brother, Frank, in Georgetown. A sister and two brothers predeceased him. D. On Feb. 6th, 1968, Dr. Alex. Kennedy of Antigonish, N.S., formerly of Georgetown, P.E.I., aged 75. He was a nativeof Ohio, N.S., graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and from McGill University as a medical doctor. He practiced first in Antigonish but moved to Georgetown in 1937 (one account says 1929) where he served until 1965. He was mayor of Georgetown from 1963 for one term having previously served on the Town Council. His wife predeceased him. A largely-attended Memorial Service was held in St. {$6155 Church, Georgetown. (From Guardian, Feb. 9, )
D. In the Charlottetown Hospital, on Feb. 7th, Herman Norman Lavandier, Georgetown in his 91st year. He was born in Georgetown, the son of the late William lavandier and Julia Clory. He opened a wood-working manufacturing plantin 1923 which continued until about two years ago. Surviving are his wife the former Lucretia Hadley, Hadleyville, Cape Breton, a daughter Dora (Mrs. William Hook) and three sons: Frank and Raymond of Georgetown and Amos of Pleasantville, N.Y. D. At the King’s County Memorial Hospital on May 7th, 1968, Mrs. John L. MacDonald of Georgetown, in her 79th year. She was born Bessie Irving in Cambridge, P.E.I., daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Irving, and was the last surviving member of her family. Left to cherish her memory are the following sons and daughters: James, Montreal; Wallace and Irving, Georgetown; Winnifred (Mrs. Albert Lavers), Charlottetown; Helen (Mrs. Frank Green), Chateauguay, Que; Jean (Mrs. Ted Westaway). New Glasgow, N.S.; Thesta (Mrs. Daniel Mahar, Toronto; Laura (Mrs. Carleton Moore, Sydney, N.S.; June (Mrs. Lindsay Moore), New Glasgow. Two sons: Glenn and John predeceased her. Surviving besides her husband are the following sons and daughters; Harold, Georgetown; Jackie, Canadian Army, Ottawa; Tony, Wendell and James, all at home; Patricia (Mrs. Cecil Shepard), Toronto; Kathleen (Mrs. Richard Fitzsimmons), Reading, Mass; Beatrice (Mrs. Howard Gardiner, Camp Gagetown, N.B.. D. At the Prince Edward Island Hospital, on June 16th, 1968, Captain Helge Larsen, of Georgetown, after a heart attack, in his 59th year. He was born in Denmark and came to Canada in 1928. For a number of years he operated the coastal freighter, Millie B. and for ten years he was captain of the Georgetown-Lower Montague ferry. Recently he served as captain on the Borden ferries. He was an elder of St. David’s Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Muriel Bulpitt and two daughters: Marie, at the Inter-Provincial School for the Deaf, Amherst, NS and Linda, a student at St. Dunstans University. presently employed with the RE].
