Fishermen Work For Change

With willingness by a few fishermen back in 1920 to work together for change, slowly other fishermen be- gan joining the group. This y, was the start of a lengthy struggle. It brought with it, not only, the Fishermen’s Council of 1925, but also the organizing of the Tignish Fisheries Co-operative, forty

five years later. Government regulations were put in force around that time,

for stringent control on the processing of lobster and fish produce for the marketplace. The cannery at Jude’s Point was renovated and upgraded to meet inspection standards for quality control. Improvements were made around the fishing harbour and new holding facilities were put in place. The new regulations by g0vernment brought with them a demise of many of the smaller rundown canneries that were situated from North Cape to Brae Harbor on the west shore, and from North Cape to Black Banks on the north. “
