Springtime Memories

With the ice and snow melting away rather quickly around the fishing harbour atJude’s Point, we knew the season of spring

had come at last. We children were anxiously waiting for our "Daddy" to take us boat sailing once again. But for now it was time to take out our gumboots, and go paddling around in the

water and get drenched from head to foot as we usually did. Springtime brought with it several sea storms from the

northeast. This would drive the water from the high tides rolling around with fish crates and tubs and brought whatever was not properly secured, to our door. We would be out having the time

of our lives in all the debris. When lunch time came we would be made stay indoors, while

our clothing and boots dried on an outdoor line. This was considered a severe punishment for us that we spent time crying over. Everything had to be dried in time for school the next morning. This kept mother busy along with packing our lunches

for a long walk to school each day. Coming home with out friends, the McRae children, we would

mostly arrive barefoot and tired out from racing each other through farmer’s fields that we travelled through. On days
