Cookhouse Days As children growing up at Jude's Point, we loved those daily visits to the old cookhouse, that even today are visibly imprinted on my mind. It was there we would stare at the abundance of bread and pies that were placed on a long counter the length of the building. It was amazing to see barrels of cookies, biscuits and doughnuts freshly baked, waiting to be eaten. On a big black stove there would be boilers and pots of vegetables waiting to be cooked, and big square pans of fish ready for the oven. Playing around the old cookhouse the aroma of the bread cooking was something our mouths watered for. There would be huge pots of beans and prunes cooking, and when the stones would be emptied outdoors, we would gather them up and break them open with rocks and eat the pits that were inside. This always kept us busy for hours at a time. As children, we would stand around the open door, until one of the cooks came out and gave us a warm biscuit or cookie. Busy as they were, they took time to talk and let us peep in, and see what they were cooking. 45
