Mother and Uncle Ben would discuss many things concern- ing the farm. Father, being a busy fisherman all of his life, respected mother’s decisions on such matters. Being a farmer at heart, and acquiring a love for horses, mother’s first purchase after moving was a quiet driving mare to meet the families' needs. Having one Holstein milk cow mother purchased one more and stocked the barn with hens, geese, ducks and two pigs. Then came two barnyard cats and a dog that she trained to take the

cows to and from the pasture. The next year we excitedly saw the first little foal arrive in the

stable, along with a new calf. We children had little chores to do, a big change from our little shanty home where life was all fun and games. Haying time on the farm was loads of fun. We would be in the loft, tramping the hay, when big loads from the hayfork would cover us up. During potato picking time we would follow the old horse and pick up the potatoes. Our friends

from school would come and help us, and make a few pennies for

themselves. Mother, in the

busy seasons, around the farm, would have Eileen, a family friend, help out in the house. Eileen would pre-
