The pioneer seamen - who weathered many a storm - kept a close watch on the heavens for changes in the weather. Having no meteorologist or satellite forecasts in those days, seamen closely watched the patterns they would see in the sun, moon and stars. Some, for example, would rely on the old almanac which was - for the most part - in every home, and believed it

to be the answer for all weather problems. As children, we would follow our father out into the dark of

night while he studied the night sky. He would predict what the next fishing day would be like by what he saw. Father would also point out the stars in the Milky Way, Small and Big Dipper, and the awesome patterns of the Northern Lights. We would wish on the stars, and try to count them, so our wishes would come true. Little did we realize as we sang about the ”man in the moon being a cowboy”, that in our lifetime we would witness, on television, man setting foot on the moon and hearing the earth orbiting Hubble space telecast in 1996 reporting 50

billion galaxies up there. It was King David who wrote to God and said ”When I consider

thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained: What is man that thou art mindful
