out in the deep pitches. Several buffalo rugs were also a must in the sleigh. His back positioned against the tailboard and Dr

Johnston was ready to travel One gentlemen calling for the Doctor with his horse and

sleigh, was well equipped he thought for the three—mile journey. On arriving at his home, he tied the horse but found the Doctor and the tailboard to be missing. Retracing his steps about a mile back, he found the Doctor in the middle of the road. Not securing the tailboard, when the sleigh hit a series of pitches the sleigh emptied. The impact of Dr Johnston on the road was not heard because of the sleigh bells. The driver recovered after a

severe tongue lashing, from the Doctor on that occasion. An amusing story that the Doctor often told on himself was

about the loss of his brownish toupee that he often wore. One night he was called for a maternity case and when he took off his many layers of heavy clothing the toupee rolled up and fell on the floor. One of the ladies sweeping the floor while the doctor was in the room, spied the toupee and swept it into the dustpan and threw it into the stove, thinking it was a mass of

hair from the family dog. Another humorist story was a maternity case where the

doctor was needed in a hurry. The husband having no horse, picked up the shafts of a light—driving wagon left in his yard, and ran the half—mile for the doctor, arriving back with him in the

wagon just in time to deliver a bouncing baby boy. Mother told us stories many times of Dr Johnston saving

father's life. Blood poisoning from a seriously injured leg took weeks to heal.
