This happened to old Barney's master, as he gathered a group of players at a cost of 50 cents to play during the season of lent, so Barney could have a home where his feed would be provided. It was great fun as the young players took turns, gathering up the players with horse and sleigh and heading out to to play for Barney. When the final night arrived and each table played off, one young fellow could not contain his excitement; he hadwon Barney, fair and square. Living on a farm he had a new red pung sleigh that a friend had given him for Christmas. Now with a horse of his own, he would be able to drive the girls around on Sunday afternoon, and go to the hockey games in Alberton on Saturday nights. With the family horse and sleigh the next day off he went with his brother with a long rope to lead old Barney home. On entering the farm they received the sad news, Barney had been found dead from old age that morning. His master was distraught not only from losing Barney but thinking his friends would now turn against him. But the winner of Barney assured him it was not his fault and their friendship would continue. Together the two lads helped bury old Barney and then he and his brother returned home with the long rope still trailing behind the sleigh. But all was not in vain as the family driving mare was made available, and off the winner of Barney went sporting with the girls in his new red pung sleigh. 143
