Out of the ashes of a disastrous fire in the village of Tignish in September of 1896, a group of businessmen met and ignited a spark that flared into what became known as a ”Bucket Brigade.” This was \:_ the starting of a lasting influence on fire protection :- for the people for all time to come. The fire that started v“ in Peter Kinch’s carriage shop destroyed 62 buildings and left 14 families homeless. With no fire protection for such a major fire, it was left to rage out of control,

until it burnt itself out. It was at the outbreak of World War Two, that a fire

system for the village was set up by members of an ”Air

Raid Precaution Group”(A.R.P). This was a volunteer group set up across Canada, in order to patrol cities, towns and villages as a security that should bombs be dropped or fires started, A.R.P would be able to handle the problems before they gained headway. Tignish at that time was allotted a four cylinder engine with hose, buckets and flashlights. Dark coveralls and tin hats were provided the group. It was there duty to see that merchants had blackout shutters installed on their windows and were

equipped with sand pails, ladders and lanterns. Having no electricity in the homes during those years, all that

was asked of the residents was to keep blinds well drawn and
