the Mutual firefighters group purchased ”The Jaws of Life Unit.” It has been used to save lives many times since been put in

operation. The spark ignited by those merchants back in 1896 never

seems to go out. They keep flaring up and burning ever brighter in fire protection for the community of Tignish. The most recent spark flared in 1980, when Frank Arsenault a resident, hearing the pleas of the firemen for more space to expand the departments needs, donated a section of his mill road farm property. This brought together the twenty—two volunteer firemen, who cleared a part of a wooded area for a new fire-hall. in 1988. John W. Perry was awarded the $ 189.000. contract for the 70 X lOO building on Church St. south. This very modern fire department built up by a fine caliber of excellent firefighters, have all the latest in fire fighting equipment needed for any emergencies that they may face. The Firemenettes that formed up in 1982 are a group of very enthusiastic people who are there to support the firemen and be prepared to help out in times of

any emergencies that may occur. Fire fighting is serious business and nobody knows that better

than Fire Chief Claude Dorgan and his volunteer firemen. They know too how important the link is when help is needed from

neighborly departments to fight a stubborn blaze. Searching stories from the past brought with it a number of

three alarm fires, that possibly would not have been so destructive, had there been the fighting equipment we are fortunate to see in the modern fire department of today.
