Office Rules of 1852 Godliness, cleanliness and punctuality were necessary back in 1852 for good business. They were the twelve steps needed for the clerical staff to remain in their employment at Myricks. 1. The firm having reduced the hours of work, the clerical staff will only have to be present between the hours of 7:a.m. to 6:p.m. 2. Daily prayers to be held each morning in the main office. 3. Clothing must be of sober nature. The clerical staff will not disport themselves, in raiment of bright colors, nor will they wear hose unless in good repair. 4. Overshoes and topcoat may not be worn in the office, but neck scarves and head wear may be worn, in inclement weather. 5. A stove is provided for the benefit of the clerical staff. Coal and wood must be kept in the locker. It is recommended that each member of the clerical staff bring four pounds of coal each day during the cold weather. 6. No member of the clerical staff may leave the room without permission by the supervisor. The call of nature are permitted, and clerical staff may use the garden below the second gate. The area must be kept in good order. 7. No talking allowed during business hours. 8. The craving of tobacco, wines or spirits, is a human weak¬ ness and as such, is forbidden to all members of the clerical staff. 193
