     Part of the inspiration for this book came from 
     
     Captains, Mansions and Millionaires: The Remarkable Story 
     
     ofMaitland, Nova Scotia by John Hawkins (Lancelot Press, 
     
     Hantsport, Nova Scotia, 1996). The story of Maitland is 
     
     a perfect illustration of what can happen, even to a famous 
     
     and prosperous community, when its chief industry dies. 
     
     How had Tignish escaped this fate I wondered — and this 
     
     book was on its way. 
     
    
   
   
    
     Much further back in my involvement with 
     
     Tignish, I read a famous book called Small Town in Mass 
     
     Society, subtitled Class, Power, and Religion in a Rural 
     
     Community. Written by Arthur ]. Vidich and Joseph 
     
     Bensman and published by Doubleday in 1960, this book 
     
     demonstrated how a small community could go on 
     
     thinking it was surviving independently while, in fact, it 
     
     was completely dependent on the nearby city. Re-reading 
     
     it recently helped me to see more clearly the differences 
     
     and similarities between Tignish and the small town in

     Every history of the co-operative movement - and 
     
     there are many — will give further information on 
     
     Rochdale, the first co-operative in England. Founded in 
     
     the 18405, it developed a set of standard rules or 
     
     principles, which have been used in the English-speaking 
     
     world ever since.
