The Antigonish Movement, which developed in the 1920s, was so—called because it originated with some of the priests who taught at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Originally intended to help the fishermen of Eastern Nova Scotia help themselves economically and educationally, it quickly spread to the other Maritime Provinces, reaching Prince Edward Island in 1936. Many books exist about it too, notably Masters of Their Own Destiny by Michael Moses Coady, one of the Movement’s leaders.
