Dan Nicholson Dan had one of the bigger farms in Little Sands . It was 13 chains wide as compared to the usual 5 and 10 chain farms. He also had a lot of clear land and fields. He grew a lot of potatoes, and had many sheep and cows. He had a big shop where he kept his tools. He had a gas engine to pump the water for the animals, and power shears for shearing wool from the sheep. Dan lived with his sister Flora, who used to teach us in Sunday school. She was wrongly blamed for going to see her sister's family at a time when they were quaran¬ tined for scarlet fever. In the battle over this she left the Little Sands church and went to Wood Islands church, but she never got over the slight. We used to like planting potatoes for Dan, as he not only paid us well, but dinner was about 10:30 a.m. and supper at 3:00 p.m. Flora set a wholesome table. Dan was one of the men people went after when they had a sick animal, or a difficult birth of one of their ani¬ mals. He always went with a smile, and never asked for pay. In fact, he was a useful man in the district, when there were no veterinarians within miles, if, in fact, there were any accessible in the entire area. Dan always kept good, well-fed horses.
