ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The researching, writing, and compiling of this book owe its thanks to many individuals. In the summer of 1999, Marilyn Lewis learned that funding was available through the Canadian Youth Employment Strategy Program for a proposed project. The Greenwich Area Residents Group took the responsibility of sponsoring the project to write a history of the St. Peters Bay Area. Joelyne MacDonald was hired that summer to begin research and she did a fine job of getting the research and interviews underway. Karen Larkin , Chantelle MacDonald, Bonnie Hayden , Tammy Dowling, and Christian Gavard were hired in November of 1999 to continue researching the history of the fire district. Their job entailed a great deal of primary research, and interviewing members of the communities encompassed within the fire district. A great deal of their time was spent at the Prince Edward Island Public Archives and the UPEI Robertson Library . The staff of the Provincial Archives was extremely helpful in watching out for any information relating to the St. Peters area. At UPEI, we would like to thank in particular Simon Lloyd of the PEI Collections Room, Leo Cheverie , and Crystal Gavard . Bonnie Hayden also helped to write the sections on "Shipbuilding" and "Rum Running." Valerie Hickox also worked on this project for one month. A few individuals, not from the area, but had a wealth of information relating to St. Peters were Mary Genetta Gallant of Mount Stewart , Douglas Murray of the PEI Department of Tourism and Fisheries, and Waldron Leard of "The History Room" in Kingsboro . Mary Gallant , a relative of Dr. Roddie and Josephine MacDonald , provided us with handwritten notes of Colin and Jean MacDonald about the history of St. Peters that proved to be extremely useful, especially in the "Business 8b Commerce" section. Douglas Murray, who has written a book about the history of the Postal Service on PEI , was very generous in sharing information relating to the Post Offices in the St. Peters Area. He also provided us with interviews that had been done with residents in our area for another project. As soon as he found out about our project, Waldron Leard called and was quick to offer any help that he could give. Waldron's research, in respect to the French period of settlement in St. Peters , his knowledge of political history, and his experience with organizing a community history proved to be a great asset to our book. Two individuals spent a great deal of time reading and editing the entire manuscript of this book. Frank Ledwell , who we are always proud to call one of our own, in addition to editing the book, wrote a wonderful introduction, which we are extremely pleased to include in our book. Douglas Baldwin, of Acadia University, who has written several books and articles on various aspects of PEI 's history, also edited this book and II
