APPENDIX ONE: LAUNCHINGS FROM ST. PETERS BAY The word "Launched" was one of the most frequent newspaper headlines in weekly editions - in the same manner as the headings of Births, Deaths, and Marriages. Following the word quoted was the name of the vessel, and that of the owner.l LAUNCHED2 On Thursday last, from the shipyard of Mr. Alexander Dingwell , St. Peters , the schr. Harp of 78 tons. She was hauled by 56 horses for the distance of 3 miles, and left within two or three hundred yards of the open water. A large group of people assembled to witness the novelty of the scene. She is intended for the Seal Fishery, and is owned by Charles Braddock , Esq. and Charles Sanderson , whose enterprise, we hope will be rewarded with success which their exertions merit.3 LAUNCHED From the shipyard of John A. McLaine , Esq., St. Peters Bay , on Thursday, the 6th inst., a highly finished Brigantine of 142 tons n.m., and 235 o.m., called the "Fleeting"4 Benjamin Bremner , Tales of Abegweit ( Charlottetown : Irwin Printing Company Ltd , 1936), 74. 2 The newspaper announcements for the "Launchings" of the Harp and the Fleeting were not clear enough to submit in their original text. They were, therefore, recopied in their original wording. 3 The Royal Gazette . 19th March 1844. 44
