APPENDIX ONE: LOBSTER CANNERIES The following is a list* of individuals from the fire district area and a brief description of their contribution to the "canning explosion." Henry Rattray Henry Rattray 's factory was located at "The Hallow," in Cable Head West . He operated this factory until his death, at which time his wife and Dan O'Hanley took it over. Henry employed twenty-five to thirty-five employees, and his lobsters were shipped to the Windsor Fishing Company in Charlottetown . Duncan MacLaren Brothers, Duncan and Frank MacLaren, Joseph MacLaren , and John Henry Simonsen built MacLaren's lobster factory around 1912- 1913. It was originally located below W.D. MacLaren 's in Cable Head West , but was moved in 1923 to the "Cape," which was just below Duncan MacLaren 's residence. There was a cookhouse, as well as shanties for the fishermen to sleep in. The factory employed thirty-five to forty people, and the lobsters were sold to the Windsor Fishing Company. It closed in 1925-1926, and was sold to Chester Pratt . Chester Pratt Chester Pratt bought his lobster factory from Duncan MacLaren around 1925-1926. It was located just east of the Turret in Cable Head West . He employed thirty to forty people at this plant. His lobster was shipped to either Robert Simpson 's in Halifax or the Portland Packing Company. Chester operated this factory for three years before shutting it down in the late 1920s. Bob Si Dolph Lewis Bob and two of his brothers built this factory sometime before the 1900s. It was located at the "Crick' in Cable Head . The factory encompassed three buildings; the factory, a cookhouse, and bait shed. There were nineteen people employed and five to six boats in the fleet. The lobster was sold to Longworths in Charlottetown . The factory was sold to Archie O'Hanley around 1913. Archie in turn sold it to Clem Sutherland who operated it until it closed down. * All of the information concerning the lobster factories in the St. Peters area was taken from a paper written by Danny & Cathy Gallant and Juanita & Shellagh Maclssac.
