The Sutherland Brothers
Vince, Clem, and Pius Sutherland owned a lobster factory below Aneas MacAualy’s residence in Cable Head. The factory was purchased lrom a Mr. MacLean, who had built and run the factory. The original factory had burned, and was replaced with a barn that was hauled from Pius Sutherland’s grandfather’s house. Vince ran the factory while Clem and Pius fished. This factory also contained a cookhouse, bait shed, and outdoor toilets. Twenty to twenty-five people were employed, and there were five boats in the Sutherland Brother’s fleet. The lobster was shipped to the Windsor Fishing Company.
Angus 82. Gus O’Hanley O'Hanley’s lobster factory was located at the MacKaskill River in Goose River below Roddy “Jimmy Joe” MacKinnon’s house. The factory also included a cookhouse with sleeping quarters attached to it. It employed
twenty to twenty—five employees, and the fleet included five to six boats. lt closed in the 19305.
Angus “Young" John MacKinnon Mr. Mercinson built this lobster factory in the early 1880s. It was located in Goose River, below Joe “Jimmy' MacKinnon’s residence. It also included a cookhouse. Angus employed thirty people and shipped his lobster to H.W. Longworth. Angus sold the factory to Harry Cox in 1935, who operated it until 1940 at which time it closed.
John P. Sutherland John bought his factory from W.D. Coffin around 1900. It was located between John and Reggie Flynn’s residence in Monticello. There Were sixteen to twenty people employed at the factory, which had a fleet of five boats. Pius Sutherland shipped John’s lobster to the Windsor Fishing Company.
John T. MacKinnon Sr.
The MacKinnon factory was built in 1926 by John and was located at the Ore River, below John Bernard O’Hanley’s house. John employed between twelve and fifteen people, and J .D. MacEwen was his only 1ndependent fisherman. His lobsters were shipped to the Windsor 1“wishing Company and also to the DeBlois Brothers. The factory burned dUI‘ing the 1938-lobster season and was not rebuilt.
Cow River Factory .. The only other factory was located along the Cow River. Roddie JOSie Tildey” MacDonald recalled that his mother worked at this factory and remembers her talking about the cold, cold water they worked in WhiCh froze her hands. Few residents recall this factory.
