By 1939, members of the club were doing well at the provincial level calf competitions with John Thompson and Charles Mullin placing 3rd and 4th respectively in a class of 20 participants. (40) Charles Mullin went on to the Maritime level of competition later that year and won a 4th place prize of $4.00 for his Ayrshire calf. That same year the Banner Calf Club from St. Peters won a $9.00 prize for eighth place finish in the “Central Calf and poultry exhibition." (41)

With a new awareness for the health of their animals, many members of the Calf Club looked into new methods to further the well being of their animals. In letters written by Mr. R. A. Lewis in February of 1939 and Charles Mullin in April of 1940 to the Department of Agriculture, interest and questions were expressed in establishing cow testing within the Calf Club. Instructions were provided by field promoter, S.C. Wright, as to what the farmers needed and what the Department of Agriculture would provide in that ”The only expense the farmer has is in purchasing a set of scales and a bottle for each cow.” (42)

The Anderson family bought their first Ayrshire calf through this program. Don Anderson recalled that it came delivered in a big box on the train from the farm of Earl MacRae in North Wiltshire. The calfs name was Raebum Evelyn and the Anderson family still has the registration papers for this calf. (43) The Anderson family‘s farm had registered Ayrshires for over 60 years.
