the early 1960s, he discovered ledgers from McLean's store, which dated back to 1840. On these ledgers it states that his store was run in the "," and that in addition to a store, he also operated "Livery Stables," where horses, wagons, and sleighs could be rented. (9)* In 1842, Sullivans were also operating a store in St. Peters . In McAlpine 's 1880 Directory, the store is listed as located in Midgell , and in Teare 's Directory for that same year, the business is listed to be in St. Peters Bay . From this it might be assumed the store was located on the south side of the Bay. Ledgers for his store, which were found in the house of the late D. J. Mullin , provide excellent examples of the barter system common to business of that time. In October of 1842 the store proprietor allowed a man from Cable Head one pound credit on his account because he had built the store proprietor a stable. In January of 1842 shoemaker Donald McDonald was credited four shillings for making a pair of shoes. A few other purchases were marked with "Have to wait until harvest time." (10) RYANS, LARKINS. AND LESLIE 'S CORNER The white house on the corner has caught many people's eye as they drive over the bridge in St. Peters heading east. This house is believed to have been built by Peter J. Ryan around 1851, in which he established a store and a "halfway house" prototypical of a bed and breakfast today. (11)* John Larkin , who lived in this house after Ryan also had a "halfway" house. In Larkin's ledger there are entries for "six nights man and horse ($7.50) and " Alexander Ryan , one night ($1.50) and one evening ($0.37). (12) John Larkin was also operating a store in this house as early as 1873, and like many merchants of the day, he kept a detailed ledger of his sales. A ledger from John Larkin 's store dating from 1873 to 1876 also contains some interesting notes. In 1873, between the months of October and December, a local male schoolteacher purchased five "bottles," twenty-one "drinks," and three pints of rum. Lawrence Doyle of the is also listed as having purchased a kerosene lamp and ten pounds of shingle nails. (13) Some purchases and prices from John Larkin 's Store included: Funeral Necessities 1 Catechism 24 panes of glass Two thousand shingles (2.50) Beef ($0.08/lb) 1 barrel of flour (($7.00) 1 gold ring ($2.00) 1 box of collars 1 Pig (14.49) 1 harp ($0.03) 1 bottle of hair oil 1 comb ($0.08) , ubert's son Joseph and his wife Lynette currently own this house, "•s is the house currently owned by David and Joanne MacEwen. 115
