John Sutherland, listed as the agent for St. Peters Bay, was one of twenty>three agents on the Island. Simon Bulger is also listed as having a tannery, and in some instances a hotel throughout Directories in the 1870—18805. Colin and Jean MacDonald listed this factory as having been located “just back of the garage on the north side of the Bridge." (72)
One of the first tailors in the area recalled by Colin and Jean MacDonald was Tauton MacDonald:
The first tailor I heard of at St. Peters was a Tauton MacDonald
who did business in John Sutherland’s house. This is the location of the Co-op store. Like shoe making, there were a lot of travelling tailors going from district to district. (73)
Murdoch Maclnnis had a shop located on the south side of St. Peters Bay and employed three to four people in his shop. Neil MacKinnon is listed as a tailor in Forest Hill in Frederick‘s 1878 Directory. In that same directory for that same year, Neil McLeod is listed as a tailor in St.
Peters. In addition to listing his business, McLeod also placed an advertisement in this directory which appeared as: (74)

There were many people who were employed as shoe or boot makers. Often these shoemakers traveled around the countryside from house to house making shoes for family members. One of the first shoemakers in the area was Andrew Mclsaac who was employed in the St. Peters area in the early 1830s. He was still listed as a shoemaker in Meacham’s 1880 Atlas. Andrew Lewis is listed as a shoemaker in DIFCCtories throughout 1864-1880. Colin and Jean MacDonald have dPCumented that Lewis was working as early as the 1850s on the South Slde 0f the Bay in his shoemaking business. Also working in St. Peters at that time was Michael Murphy. (75) On the north side of the bay later on, TOm Lewis and Barnaby O’Hanley made shoes for residents there.
In Midgell, D.S. MacLaughlan worked as a shoemaker throughout the1860-18703. In the late 18705, J.R. McQuaid was listed as a Shoemaker on the Cardigan Road. In 1880, George Robertson had established his “Boot and Shoe Manufactory" in Farmington.
