In the early years of the Festival, activities were held at the Eastern Kings . Many of the volunteers of the brunch that initial year recall the canopy of branches used to cover the "cooking area" and the neglected eggs that never made it into the pancakes. An old bus served as the canteen and a flat bed was used as the stage. In the business aspect, the festival has also proven to be a success. MacAulay, who has served as Chairman for the festival for several years, recalled that the money generated, by the Festival was put directly back into providing facilities both for the festival and for the community. After witnessing several volunteers the first year in the old bus, which served as the canteen, dripping sweat from the end of their noses that "would have filled a thimble," said that "By the time . the next one came around we had a canteen built and a stage." (55) In the late 1980s, the idea of having pools installed in the park surfaced. MacAulay credits Garth Sanderson , manager of the Morell Credit Union at the time, with the idea of installing the pools. (56) At this time, the government pulled its funding and the village had to take over the park. Some thought it no longer viable. With a government grant, and $16,000 in the bank from the first two festivals, the pools were installed. In 's opinion, the swimming pools, the canteen, the stage, and the blueberry festival have had a great deal to do with the park succeeding." (57) This one weekend, in the middle of the summer, is anticipated by many. Babysitters are booked a year in advance for the dances simply referred to as the "Friday night and Saturday night dance." These two dances, which take place in the rink, generally fill the rink to capacity and attract people from all over Kings County. Although some traditions such as the " Miss Blueberry Pageant " have run their course, new traditions such as the " Mr. Blueberry " have surfaced to replace them. Seventeen years after Cathy MacEwen was crowned the first " Miss Blueberry ," her neighbor from Greenwich , Craig "Porky" Campbell was crowned the first " Mr. Blueberry ." SHIPWRECK POINT PARK Another park in the fire district area is found within the community of Naufrage . The name, aptly chosen by young area residents Keilia Martin and Adam Fraser reflects the long history of shipwrecks that have taken place off the coast of Naufrage . Established m 1994 by the North Side Community Development Organization, the Park was erected to enhance the local area, for both the community and tourists who use the park's facilities. Covering approximately one acre, Shipwreck is currently a day park. There is playground equipment for children, picnic ables, and three walking trails. Developed with the help of the Island 195
