to the Naufrage Bridge and £10 for the bridge at the head of St. Peters Bay. [13) In the Road Compensation Act of 1840, it was resolved that “the sum of fifteen pounds be granted and placed at the disposal of the Lieutenant Governor, towards defraying the expenses incurring in erecting a bridge* over the head of St. Peters Bay." (14) Just eleven years later, the people of St. Peters Bay and vicinity petitioned the government of the day for “a grant for rebuilding and repairing bridges over the Morell, the Midgell, Marie, and that at the head of St. Peters Bay.” (15) By 1875, the bridge was repaired again, with the old railing and breastwork being advertised for sale on December 23rd of that year. (16)

By 1850 the basic road network of the Island was in place. Tenders to build and repair existing roads appeared in the newspapers of the day, such as this 1851 article, which appeared in the Examiner:

The subscriber will sell at Auction, to the lowest bidder, on the spot to building and Repairing of the several roads and bridges in this district as follows:

On Thursday. the 12th day of June next, the building of a new bridge over the Midgell River, also a new bridge over Marie.

On Friday 13th June the repairing of the Morell Bridge, and the road from the Morell to the Head of St. Peters Bay, where most required.

On Saturday, 14th June, the repairing of the road from the Head of St. Peters Bay towards Cardigan and the road from Hugh MacKinnon's towards the Baltic.

On Monday, 16th of June, repairing the road from the Head of St. Peters Bay to the line of Lot 42, towards East Point, and the road from Main Road to John MacIntyre’s, Cable Head, and the road from the Head of St. Peters Bay to line of Lot 42, Bay Fortune Road.

On Tuesday, 17th June, repairing the road from Pine Brook towards Thomas Pope's, and the Road from Head of St. Peters Bay towards Greenwich, and the Road from St. Peters Bay, past Leslie’s Mill to Cable Head.

On Thursday, 19th June, the repairing of the wharf head of St. Peters Bay, and removing the wharf at the end of the Cable Head Road.

And on Saturday, the 21st June, the building of a new wharf at the end of the road near Charles Dingwell's, South side of St. Peters Bay.

Sale to commence each day at 10 o’clock forenoon. Approved security will be required for the due performance of each contract.
