In 1951, a new school was built to accommodate both the St. Peters South School and the students of the high school.* The following year, in January of 1951, the students moved into their new school.
Many students who passed through the high school in St. Peters have gone on to become renowned teachers themselves. Father Wendell 4 Maclntyre, who came from Selkirk to attend school in the courthouse, became a Roman Catholic priest and was a Professor of English at St. Dunstans and later at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). He has been editor of the Abegweit Review for many years. Frank Ledwell, who has taught at various levels from grade school right through to University. He was a Professor of English at for many years, before serving as Dean of Arts from 197 8—1983. He is an accomplished author whose works include Portraits and Gastroscopes, The Dust is the Earth, The North Shore of Home, and Dip and Veer. Jimmie MacAualy, who had Frank Ledwell teach him in grade one, and teach him again at a night school in his first year in St. Dunstans, was principal at Morell Regional High School for twenty-six years. His brother Alex MacAulay, is currently the president of Holland College in Charlottetown. Senator Doris Anderson was a professor of Home Economics at Prince of Wales College, and later at the University of Prince Edward Island. She served as Supervisor for the Department of Home Economics from 1948—1968, and was appointed a Senator in 1995. Patrick Maclnnis from the Fortune Road went on to obtain a doctorate in Philosophy from the University in Montreal and taught at St. Dunstans University.
Dr. Hubert O’Hanley and Dr. Bob Anderson also graduated from the high school and went on to make significant contributions in the field of medicine. For many years, Dr. O’Hanley was one of the most respected pediatric doctors on the Island. In 1999 his devotion to the children he cared for over the years was recognized when he was awarded the Order of Prince Edward Island on the 9th day of the 9th month of the 99th year, which he modestly replied “was a honor" to receive. (30) Dr. Bob Anderson, who specialized in internal medicine and cardiology, was at one time, the Head of the Department of Medicine at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was also a Professor of Medicine at Dalhousie University. Dr. W. Alan Anderson was a Professor of Molecular Biology at Laval University in Quebec. Dr. Ray MacEwen, nephew of Mr. Robert MacEwen who donated the stained glass window to the United Church, also went to the high school. In addition to the field of education and medicine, there have been many other students, who have gone through the high school and have achieved success in their chosen careers.
