According to Anna Rattray , for many years Mary made a living using her acquired knowledge, and tended to the sick and mothers during childbirth in the Cable Head area. For this reason she was known as "Granny" or "Auntie" Jackson. (5) Many women remembered are by local residents as acting within the capacity of a midwife: Mrs. Margaret Rattray and Mrs. Lyle MacLaren of Greenwich , Mrs. Matilda MacDonald of Cable Head East , Ms. Katherine Farmer of Farmington . Ernie MacKinnon of also recalled that Mrs. Jane MacDonald , Mrs. Campbell , Mrs. MacKay , Mrs. MacLeod , and Mrs. Wilfred Larkin acted as midwives. Edith MacKinnon recalled that Ella Wilson performed midwife duties and at one time had visited almost every house in the Selkirk area helping out the local residents. After Dr. DuClos , the next recorded doctor for the St. Peters area appears in Meacham 's 1880 Atlas , a Dr. John Walsh is listed as practicing doctor on the Cardigan road. He was followed by many doctors in the St. Peters area such as Dr. Fraser , Dr. MacLaughlan , Dr. Roddie Macdonald, Dr. Yeo , Dr. Malcom Beck , Dr. Jack MacLellan , and Dr. Arnold Burden . Out of all the doctors that have resided in St. Peters over the years, however, Dr. Roderick James MacDonald, simply referred to by his patients as " Dr. Roddie ," is perhaps the most remembered. With the onset of the " Golden Age of Medicine" in the early 1900s, Dr. Roddie was typical of the last generation of "country doctors" who resided and worked solely within their rural Island communities. (6) Frank Ledwell Frank Ledwell , who grew up beside Dr. Roddie 's homestead on the south side of St. Peters Bay and as a child accompanied Dr. Roddie on many of his house calls, puts into words how the people of St. Peters felt, and still feel about Dr. Roddie . Born in in 1858, Dr. Roddie was not native to St. Peters . After receiving his education at Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstans University, he taught school for five years and worked as a bookkeeper at night to save money for medical school. He studied medicine at Trinity College in Toronto and graduated 338
