Records show that Thomas H. Pope was born at Seven Mile Bay to par- ents Charles and Annie Pope. Her maiden name was Annie Hawkin, daughter of Thomas Hawkin of St. Eleanors. Thomas Hawkin Pope was baptized December 25, 1848 at St. John’s Anglican Church in Crapaud. Charles and Annie later lived for a time in St. Eleanor’s.

At various times Thomas Pope was in O’Leary, Port Hill, Bideford and later in Northam. In the 1871 Census, Thomas H. Pope was listed as a Clerk in Bideford. On December 16, 1877, he married Susan Elizabeth (Eliza) Yeo daughter of John and Caroline (nee Taylor) Yeo. John was a brother of James Yeo, Sr. Susan Eliza was born March 17, 1852 in Charlottetown. She and Thomas H. Pope had three daughters—Florence Isabel and Ethel Maude, born in Bideford, and Mabel Constance, born in Northam. All were baptized at the Anglican Church, Port Hill.

Various documents at the Provincial Archives in Charlottetown show that he took an active part in community affairs. He was a witness to the signing of a transfer of land in 1879 from Albert Williams to William Richards. He was listed as a Trustee of the Methodist Church in Bideford on a Conveyance of Church Property from representatives of the Bible Christian Church to the Trustees of the Methodist Church in Bideford

dated October 4, 1881.

In 1883 he purchased 75 acres in Northam, Lot 13 and set up an extensive business there, operating a store, buying and selling, dealing with people from a wide area all over the Maritimes.

On September 21, 1883 a Lease Agreement was made between Thomas H. Pope and James Coleman, Superintendent of the Prince Edward Island Railway, to build a warehouse on Station ground at Northam for warehousing of grain or produce for shipment by rail. Yearly rent, One

dollar.

Mr. Pope’s large ledgers covering the period of 18834885 inclusive may be viewed at the Archives. Thomas H. Pope was Postmaster at Northam

from October 1, 1883 to January 24, 1887.

On July 10, 1884, an Indenture was made between Thomas H. Pope of Northam, Lot 13, and his wife, Susan E. Pope, and the Trustees of the
