Lemuel A. Burleigh ( L.A .), son of Thomas and Sophie (nee Ford) Burleigh married Pearl Williams , daughter of Philip and Medora (nee Rogers) Williams. They had two daughters, Vivian and Georgia, and a son, James. L.A . had a store built by his father-in-law, Philip Williams in 1920. The family living quarters were built over the store. At that time, Phil was responsible for mail delivery on the Ellerslie , which he did by bicycle. To give Phil more time to build the store, L.A . delivered the mail in his place. L.A . and his family carried on a grocery and general store operation, sell¬ ing a variety of everyday necessities, including clothing, wallpaper, appli¬ ances, paint, motor oil and kerosene. Gasoline pumps were outside. They sold coal, feed for animals and parts for Massey-Harris farm machinery. They bought and sold potatoes, butter, berries, baskets and eggs, and shipped dressed poultry. In 1946, when James built an egg grading station across the road from the store on land purchased from Will Millar , he found ashes—evidence of where Will Millar 's store had been. The gaso¬ line pumps were moved across the road to a location near the egg grad¬ ing station and later removed. In 1947, the store was raised and a new foundation installed with the work done by Joshua Millar , who also built on an extension for down¬ stairs living quarters. When James and his wife, Pauline (nee Jelley) Burleigh, took over the business in 1957-58, they had the store widened to create additional sales space. Ralph Millar did the carpentry work. They continued operating the store, adding pipe fittings and other plumb¬ ing supplies to their stock until 1986 when they sold the business and retired. The business continues to operate as the Ellerslie Red and White and is owned by James and Cathy (nee Mugridge) Trainor. The Ellerslie Credit Union Limited was incorporated May 9, 1945. Membership included residents of Ellerslie , Bideford , East Bideford , MacNeill's Mills, Freeland , , Conway , Mount Pleasant , Enmore and Inverness . Directors were: Gordon Millar , Glenford Millar, James Williams , Russell Ellis , B.L. MacDougall , Harold Millar , Ralph Ellands , Ira Banks and Kenneth MacNevin . On September 20, 1945, a special meeting was held in Ellerslie Hall to organize a Co-operative. A Co-op store was built and general store busi¬ ness was carried on for several years beginning in December 1945. Animal feed was bought in bulk and livestock was shipped co-operative¬ ly by train. 32 Roots & Branches
