The Credit Union closed out in December 1963 and the Co-op store building was sold in 1964 to members of Bideford United Church who used it for a Christian Education Centre During the war of 1939-1945, the No. 10 Bombing and Gunnery School in the British Commonwealth Air Training Program was established at Mount Pleasant , Prince Edward Island . In December 1940 an airport was built with about forty buildings. It had a capacity for a maximum of 1700 at one time, including staff. Some of the airmen were married and several of those couples boarded at homes in surrounding areas as far away as Summerside . They joined in the social life of the community and many friendships were made. When the war was over, the facilities at the airport were used for several years by different organizations for fund-raising events. Eventually most of the buildings were sold. The largest hangar was pur¬ chased by Morrison and MacRae Ltd. and later demolished. At one time skates were made without being attached to boots. They were strapped on to whatever footwear was being worn. Later when a pair of skates meant boots with blades attached, skating still depended on the weather. Sometimes there would happen to be glib ice on a river, brook, pond or in a field. Levelling an area and flooding it with water in calm frosty weather sometimes made a patch of ice for skating. About 1911, in the space between the back of his store and his steam saw mill, A.A. MacCaull built an outdoor rink, possibly the first in the com¬ munity. It was the only one in the area at that time. Others were built later in other parts of the community. The last one, remembered to have been about 1960-62, had a canteen, change rooms and lights. It was located in Bideford near what was known as Park Corner , a curve in the road lead¬ ing to Ellerslie from Bideford . When the war was over in 1945, the first indoor rink was made in a large hangar at Airport. The hangar was torn down in i 960. The Community Sports Centre was built in Tyne Valley in 1964.
