was fitting up the Yeo mills at the time. The name TYNE was after the River Tyne in England and as the stream entering the headwaters of Trout River flowed through a valley with high banks on either side, it was named Tyne Valley.

At some time prior to 1879, James M. Forbes of Lot 16 and James H. Cole of Bedeque went in partnership in the mercantile business in Tyne Valley. Their store was situated on the hill where the Lidstone General Store was later located. In 1879 Forbes and Cole opened a new store in Tyne Valley on the corner where the Royal Bank later stood. The follow- ing items were published in THE JOURNAL newspaper:

May 13, 1880. The store and dwelling ofForbes and Cole add much to the picturesque view of the place. The store is overflowing with spring goods of every description. They buy for cash and adhere strictly to that principle, and by that manner of trading, the customer receives the greatest bargains. They are both noted far and near for their honest and straight-forward principles. We wish them every success.

June 10, 1880. Messrs. Forbes and Cole have dissolved partnership by mutual consent. The business is to be carried on by Mr. James Forbes. We wish him success.

In the same paper: Mr. James Cole has decided to open up a wholesale and retail flour store in this vicinity.

James Forbes operated his store himself, adding a tailoring and millinery department, and the business flourished. Ads in January 1882 show the kind of goods carried in the store:

Marked down, in order to clear out entire stock of dry goods, and to give our customers an opportunity of purchasing goods at a low rate, we have great reductions in all our leading lines, and Cash Buyers can rely on get- ting bargains. Call and see us. Inspection invited. J.M. Forbes, Tyne Valley.
