Tyne Valley, Merchant; William B. Hayes of Bideford, Fox Rancher; and G. Shelton Sharp of Bideford, Farmer. The Cold Storage Co. Ltd. dealt in all kinds of fox food and meats for human food. There was cold storage space for rent. People could buy frozen tripe, horsemeat, tommycods, etc. for their foxes. They could also rent a box to keep meat for their own use.

John Hayes (1808—1897) was born in Ireland. He came to Prince Edward Island in 1830, settled at Tryon and purchased land at Albany. He married Annie Jackman (1818—1890) who was also of Irish descent. John and Ann are buried in Bideford. They had four sons: William, Robert, Frank and Joseph L.

Their oldest son,William (1838—191 1) was born at Albany, Prince Edward Island. He came to Lot 12 in 1862, purchased land in Bideford and built a carriage factory—the only one for many years between Summerside and Alberton. He carried on an extensive business in the manufacture of carriages and sleighs of different kinds, and also did repair work. In 1863, he married Bethia Price (1841—191 1) daughter of Richard Price of Bedeque. In 1874, William Hayes was listed as Postmaster for Ellerslie, a position which he held for 37 years with the utmost satisfaction to all. The Post Office was located in his home in Bideford. In Lucy Maud Montgomery’s journals, she writes that she boarded with the Hayes fam— ily at the Post Office for the month of June 1895. William and Bethia Hayes had 10 children including William B. (W.B) (1867—1931), Maud (b.1878) and R. Clifford (1885—1951). William and Bethia as well as some of their children are buried in Bideford United Church Cemetery.

John and Ann’s second son, Robert Irving (1849—1903) married Jane H. Milligan (1846—1881) in 1872. They had three children: Russell Clark, Bruce and Annie. After Jane’s death he married Ella G. Milligan (1857— 1945) in 1883. They had 3 children: Irene, Clayton and Leith Irving. Their parents, Robert and Ella are buried in Bideford United Church Cemetery.

Frank Hayes, the third son of John and Ann, was a farmer at Searletown. He had a son named Joy.

The fourth son, Joseph L. Hayes (1863-1905) married Sarah P. Williams (1872—1937). They are buried in Bideford United Church Cemetery.

WB. Hayes (1867—1931), son of William and Bethia, received a good dis- trict school education. His early years were devoted to farm labor. Later
