Port Hill to New Bideford. In Meacham’s 1880 Atlas the location Of an Anglican Church is shown to be near the residence of TH. Pope.
A report in 1857 stated that the Glebe Schoolhouse at New Bideford was ready, and used for service in summer. This report also stated: Lot II— ready for service all year round. Consecrated by Bishop in I857. It was named St. Peter’s Church. In 1861 the report stated Glebe School house, one of church buildings, fitted for Divine Service. Flag was hoisted in place of bell. In 1863, the Bishop addressed the Congregation at New Bideford for the first time.
In 1869 Rev. Swabey was appointed to Chaplaincy in France and Rev. Edward H. Ball was appointed to the Parish of Port Hill, succeeded in I876 by Rev. R.T. Dobie, followedvby Rev. H.P. Higgenson, Rev. T.B. Reagh, and Rev. Henry Harper, who remained from 1883 to 1913. A new St. James Church was erected in Port Hill in 1885. It is recorded that Thomas H. Pope, John Maynard, Jr. and Thomas Adams were appointed to procure plans and specifications for the church in 1882. The church was opened for Divine Services, September 20, 1885 with Venerable Archdeacon Read as preacher. In 1890, the report stated $700 was col-
lected for a church in Ellerslie. Present building in use not fit for Divine service.
In 1894 a report stated: Church in course of erection at Ellerslie. John England, Jr. donated the land for the church and Edward England put up the frame. It was finished both inside and out by ‘Little’ Harry Williams who studied architectural design in Massachusetts. John England did some of the carving. It was named St. John’s Church and consecrated by the Bishop on July 2, 1899.
