PUBLIC LIBRARY
Through the efforts of Mrs. Mary (nee Adams) Birch, a Public Library was established in Tyne Valley about 1936. It has been at several different locations with several different librarians throughout the years. At pres- ent, it is in the building previously owned by the Royal Bank with Mrs. Carolyn Millar as librarian.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
The earliest available record of meetings leading up to the organization of the Tyne Valley Fire Department is a Minute Book beginning with minutes of a meeting held April 3, 1945. The heading for the minutes is ARP (AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS), TYNE VALLEY CIVILIAN DEFENCE COMMITTEE. The meeting was held at the Royal Bank with Wes Milligan, Chairman and G. Ivan MacKay, Secretary. Others present were Warren Nisbet, Hart Lidstone, Horace Lidstone, Lloyd Sharp, Edison Williams, Frank Platts, Nelson Sheen and Cecil Birch. At that meeting a motion was passed that Ivan MacKay be Secretary-Treasurer with power to sign cheques, etc. The minutes showed that they had lumber on hand for a building to house ARP equipment and plans were being made to get the building started.
At following meetings through communication from Charlottetown Headquarters, demobilization circulars, Dept of Reconstruction, it was learned that the province had purchased from War Assets Corporation the entire stock of Civilian Defence equipment, and that each ARP unit had the preference of purchasing the equipment. At a meeting held September 25, 1945 it was recorded that hip rubber boots, coats and coveralls were purchased by eleven men. Members present were unanimous in the deci- SiOn to purchase all the ARP equipment on hand and in addition, a 150 GPM Bickle Seagrave Pump and to organize a Fire Department.
