Members of the Fire Brigade acquire and maintain an adequate number and type of trucks, stocked with items that are useful in emergencies. They keep a good supply of equipment and gear on hand. All firemen are trained in First Aid, CPR and fire-fighting.

In 1983, the Tyne Valley Fire Department earned the distinction of being the first Fire Department on Prince Edward Island with all its members having completed the St. John’s Ambulance Course and being members of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, PEI Division. Regular monthly meetings are held. Minutes and the report of the Fire Chief are kept. Training courses are taken regularly by Training Officers who then hold training sessions frequently with other members, continually upgrading knowledge and efficiency in different situations and conditions.

In addition to being called on to fight fires, they are also called on for emergencies requiring Jaws of Life, air bags, fibreglass back boards, neck braces and blocks to stabilize heads and Whatever other equipment need- ed in a particular situation. Training Manuals are obtained and various

training courses are given.

The men of the Fire Brigade keep prepared for quick action by checking their gear, practising putting on their breathing apparatus and by carry— ing a pager. They visit public places including the school and hospital, giv— ing demonstrations on the use of fire extinguishers, conducting fire drills at the school and evacuation plans at the hospital. They keep in touch with other Fire Departments through visitations.

Frequent fundraisers are necessary. Financial assistance has been received from the Firemen’s Club including assistance in acquiring a pag- ing system. Large donations have been received from individual donors. The Brigade makes charitable donations and supports worthy causes. They participate in sports, attending and hosting various tournaments.
