Royal Canadian Legion In wartime, many young men and some young women from the area enlisted in the Armed Forces. On September 26,1946 service men from Ellerslie , Tyne Valley , McNeill's Mills , Freeland , Conway and met in the hall at Ellerslie and formed a Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. A large number of vet¬ erans, initiated by IS. Walker, Provincial President; assisted by Harry J. Bishop , M.M ., Provincial Vice-President; N.W. Lowther , M.M ., Dominion Representative; Roland Philipson , President of Branch; and R.W. Betton of the Miscouche Branch, were in attendance. Officers elect¬ ed were: LA. England , President; Courtney Maynard, Vice-President; Cyril Williams , Secretary-Treasurer. Executive members were Wallace J. Palmer , Winston A. England , Thomas MacNevin , Orrin MacDonald , Edgar Oatway and William Birch . The charter for Branch No. 22 was issued October 23, 1946. Charter members were B.J. Broome , H.W. Grant , W.J. Palmer , J.W. Broome , C.G. MacKinnon , J.E. Wagner , J.A. MacDonald , S.G. Lewis , Cyril Williams , Orrin MacDonald , G.J. Moran , J.W. MacKinnon , L.A. England , W.E. Oatway and W.A. England . During the summer of 1947 a building was acquired from Air Property and moved to the present site. The members put a cement basement under it the following year. During the school terms 1949-51, classroom space was made available in this building for the senior grades due to overcrowding in the Bideford and Ellerslie local schools. In i 960, during the severe forest fires in the area, the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) in conjunction with the army, used the Legion Home as Headquarters. In 1967 a Cenotaph was erected as a Centennial Project. In 1974 the Legion Home was enlarged to 30' x 100', plus a kitchen 12' x 43', which is often used in catering to a variety of events.
