The Auxiliary supported a Foster Child in Korea for a number of years through the Foster Plan of Canada, and still contribute to support a child through the West Prince Zone Ladies Auxiliary.
In the summer of 1960 when the Ellerslie Branch No. 22 became the focal point for rest, food and shelter for the many firefighters and homeless during the disastrous fires in the area, the Ladies Auxiliary played an important part in preparing lunches and meals for those involved.
They have been active in many ways, operating a Dry Canteen at dances at the Legion, making and selling clam chowder, serving lunch and assist- ing at Blood Donor Clinics. They have catered to many wedding banquets and other events.
They supported the Branch with monetary donations and by purchasing furnishings for the Legion Home. For a number of years they held a ‘house-cleaning day’ during which they worked together and cleaned the whole premises. In 1976 the Auxiliary furnished a Ladies lounge. When the Lounge was enlarged in 1999, the Auxiliary donated funds to put in a new floor.
Donations are made to fire victims and to Stewart Memorial Hospital. Scholarships are awarded to students in Ellerslie Elementary and Hernewood Junior High schools who are children or grandchildren of the Ladies Auxiliary members.
Support has been given to many worthy causes including Christmas Daddies, Easter Telethon, Ellerslie Day Camp,Tyne Valley Figure Skating Club and Lights for Life. During the early years, the Auxiliary worked closely with the Legion members to pack boxes of toys and other items for needy families in the area. Veterans and widows were remembered at Christmas with cards and treats.
The ladies also take an active part in Zone activities. It has been the cus- tom of the Auxiliary to give a special donation to WARBRIDES who returned to visit their families overseas. Wives of Legion Presidents and delegates attending conventions are also assisted with expenses.
The Auxiliary has 10 Life Members: Pearl Williams, Eva Colwill (recent- 1y deceased), Elva MacLenmm, Kathleen MacLean, Georgie Ellis, Susie
Enman, Norma Ramsay, Doris Enman, Doreen Redmond and Rena Hawkins.
