Figure skating also provides enjoyment during the winter months with the skaters holding competitions and an annual ice show at the end of the season. Instruction has been provided at the Community Sports Centre since 1978. Softball has been a popular summer sport in the area for many years. The Ellerslie Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion constructed a ball field in the early 1960's. The ball field constructed in Tyne Valley in 1976 is on land, most of which is owned by The Tyne Valley Presbyterian Church with some land donated by Elmer and Florence Baker. The ball field is named Bakersfield. Minor league softball teams compete with other com¬ munities. The Northam Alpines team was formed in the early 1970's.They competed in the Intermediate Fastball League, in the 1970's and 8o's, making it to the league finals several years. Harness racing is a popular sport among many of the residents of the area. Some horse owners have their own track for training. In Tyne Valley , a track was constructed in 1982-83. The Milligan's and Morrison's Judges stand was obtained and hauled to the site. Matinee races were held there for a number of years. The track is still used by some for training their horses. Ellerslie Lions Club The Ellerslie Lions Club was organized on April 21, 1972. King Lion Trowsdale was President; Lion Rogers Burleigh , Secretary; and Lion Robert Williams , Treasurer. Charter members were: Burton Burleigh, Leonard Burleigh , Rogers Burleigh , Ben Coughlin , Harold Coughlin , Chester Grigg , George Henderson , Peter G. Millar , Lester Milligan , Carl MacDougall , Bernard Noye , Phillips, Wendell Phillips , Albert O. Sharpe , Trowsdale, George Williams , Lome Williams , Malcolm Williams , Robert Williams and Wendell Williams . Other members joining later were: Winston Barlow , Barry Dennis , Frank Howell , Carmen Millar , Robert Millar , Jr., Kenneth Milligan , Roy Oatway and Clinton Trowsdale. The motto of the Lions Club was "We Serve". Meetings were held at the Ellerslie Legion Home until the 108 Roots & Branches
