sales business, called Phillips Auto Sales Ltd., on the corner of the Barlow and Ellerslie Roads in Bideford. In 1969 they became a sub-dealer for Ford and Mercury vehicles. Wendell’s sons, Wayne and Warren, purchased the business from Harold and Wendell and in 1980 they acquired a Lada dealership.

In 1981 they opened a second location in East Royalty and Warren moved to Charlottetown to operate it. They closed the Ellerslie site in the fall of 1992. Wayne sold his share to Warren who continues to operate the business in Sherwood. Wayne is a salesman for Summerside Chrysler Dodge Ltd. The Ellerslie-Bideford property was sold to Randy Palmer who operates an auto body repair business in the former garage. In the area that had been a show room, a Grower Direct florist business has been operated by Heather Strongman since 1998.

After Lorne Millar purchased the Tyne Valley garage, he operated it for seven years as Millar’s Service Station. He sold it in 1975 to Emmett Biggar who operated it for one year. Cecil Banks and Roger Williams then took it over, followed by Blair Colwill and Lyman Smith. Ernest Yeo renovated and operated it as Ernie’s Shell from 1981—1983. Paul Williams then took it over, followed by Timothy Ross. At that time it changed to become an Irving station. Bruce Moore operated it for a short time before it was taken over by Charles Moore and Earl Dyment who have operated it since 1987. On January 1, 2001 they changed the name from Tyne Valley Irving to Tyne Valley Service Centre. They sell Irving gasoline and products, operate a 24 hour emergency towing service and do motor vehicle inspections, brake work, exhaust and vehicle repairs.

In March 1985 Elmer Hutchinson opened his business Hutchinson’s Wheel to Wheel Security located at what has been known as PARK CORNER, a curve on the Ellerslie Road across from the Ellerslie Consolidated Elementary School. He has sophisticated computerized alignment equipment for determining exact adjustments to be made to the front end of vehicles. He also conducts motor vehicle inspections and makes repairs to vehicles.
