; Foreword
I trust that this history ofthe Diocese ofCharlottetown will provide our readers with an understanding ofthe lives ofthe early settlers who wor— shipped God, often in very humble settings. Thefaith oft/aese people
cannot be measured in mere words or pictures 7 it is simply unfathom—
able.
1 am deeply indebted to Father Art O’Shea, our Diocesan Historian, whose tremendous amount ofresearch and work: has made
this project a reality.
It is my hope thatyou will gatherfronz these pages a reasonable understanding of the Lord ’s promise to abide with usforever. Popejohn Paul II, in Novo Millcnio Ineunte, tells us that this promise has sustained the Church for two thousand years. This promise has definitely been evident in the Diocese ofCharlottetown since its_/bundation.
The-future will undoubtedly present many challengesfor the people oft/7e Diocese ofCharlottetown. Faced with these challenges we must continue to remember the Lord 's
promise, “I am withyou always to the end of the age". (Mt 28:20)
The Roman Catholic Church, through the Ivor/e, ofourancestors, has been
instrumental in the establislmzent ofmany ofthe social services now available to the people ofPrince Edward Island. \V ’ must pr ’serve their vision, especially their struggle to leeep safe the deposit ofthefizith.
[ talce this opportunity to than/e, very sincerely all ofour Catholic people who have been part ofour rich history and those who are presently maleing history. All have been tireless in passing on thefaith that they received from then‘fin‘eflztlu’rs andforemotlwrs. They are the unsung saints, the pillars upon which our diocesan Church was built and upon which it now stands.
