[Louis XV] (1731) (King of France). Brevet de Concession a l’isle 3’. Jean aux 5". Cottard, du Boccage, Narcis et Roma. 17 July 1731. [PAC, AC, Series B, Vol.55, fols. 58-5-58-Gv-(sicn

The following is taken from a copy of the letters patent of 1731 making a proprietary grant to Jean-Pierre Roma and others of that part of I79 Saint-Jean drained by the three rivers flowing into what is now Cardigan Bay. It contains the standard clause reserving to the king oak woods suitable for royal naval vessels, as well as allowing royal officials free access to firewood for the garrison and timber for public works. As in the earlier grant to the Count of Saint-Pierre such a clause is not indicative of any prior knowledge of oak woods on the island. It does however indicate the importance placed by the French government on a tree species that provided the standard material used in European ship-building.
