Anon. (1743) Mémoire sur Isle Royal/e (An official in the Marine in France). 20 June 1743 [PAC, AC, C”B, Vol. 26, fols. 219-24] The name of the author of this memorandum, which contains a summary of the policy of the French government with regard to lie Roya/e and lie Saint-Jean, is not known, but it seems to have been written by an official in the department of the Marine in Paris. The document may even have been composed by the minister since in the margin is written: ’Porté au Roy’ [carried to the King]. It begins with a summary of historical events from the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 (which led to the establishment of Louisbourg}, and also contains a summary of the current deployment of troops on the two islands. The comment on the island '8 timber suggests that from the government’s point of view the exploitation of the forests was considered a principal reason for the establishment of the colony. [PAC, AC, CHB, Vol. 26, fols. 223-223v] With regard to lle Saint-Jean, we have undertaken its settlement for three reasons: The island has a lst — In order to expand the fishery of that coast t’mber resource. 2 — in connection with the building timber that is there 3 — for the cultivation of the soils. They are indeed of a very good quality. [PAC, AC, CHB, Vol. 26, fols. 223-223v] 98
