81L TABLE 1-4. The occurrence of names referring to hemlock, tamarack and cedar in lists made by all those recorders who aimed to provide a list (even if incomplete) of the trees occurring on Prince Edward Island (see the footnote for the names of the recorders). Most of the lists were intended to apply to the whole island (though most recorders would have known only a part of the island). \— nan III-IUIIIUIUIIUIIUIIIUIUUUII-flflflflflfllfl IIIIIIIIIIDIII-IIIIIIIIIIIIII-IIIIIII 'Larch' Ill-IUD-Ila-IIIUII-flfllll-Uflllfl 'Larch or hackmatack' IIIII-IIIIIIIUIIIIII-II-IIIII 'Larch (Pinus tar/xi III-IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-III.- 'Larch. tamarack' IIIII-III-IIIII-IIIIIII-IIUII 'Tamarack' III-III..-III-IIIIIIIII-IIIII 'Juniper' I IIIIII-III-DIIIIIIIIIIII-IIIUII ‘Juniper (larch)' \l Key to recorders: 1 - Holland (1764); 2 - Holland (1765: March); 3 — Holland (1765: October); 4 - Morris (1769); 5 - Patterson (1770); 6 - Patterson (1774); 7 - Curtis (1775); 8 - [Clark] (1779); 9 — Inglis (1789); 10 - [Cambridge ](1796?); 11 - Walsh (1803); 12 - Selkirk (1803); 13 - [MacDonald] (1804); 14 — Selkirk (1805); 15 — Stewart (1806); 16 - Anon. Bagster (1861) appears to have listed hemlock as “Pinus Canadens/s, Canada Pine” (see Table 1-2). McSwain & Bain (1891) give Latin names only: Lar/x Americana, Thu/a occidental/s, Abies Canadens/s (i.e. hemlock). These have been placed in the rows for the standard common names. [Bain’s] (1882) list contains only the broad-leaved trees.
