Mr. [Alexander] LAIRD. If we submit to it, we may expect that. by and by, we shall not be allowed to cut down large trees for firewood, merely because they might he wanted by our ship-builders.
Hon. the SPEAKER [Alexander Rae] said he thought the fairest way of dealing with the question would be to agree that the duty of 3d. a knee should remain unchanged, until after the close of the navigation,
The Chairman having put the question on the motion of the Hon. Mr. Coles for striking out the prohibitory part of the clause under consideration, it was agreed that the prohibitory part was struck accordingly.

XVI Victoria C. 5. An Act for raising a Revenue [16 April 1853]
[p. 19] [From a lengthy table of the duties on commodities]: On all Juniper Knees exported after E s. d. this Act goes into operation, each 0 1 O [p. 23]
V. On all Juniper Knees to be exported from this Island, there shall, after this Act goes into operation, and during the continuance thereof, be paid a Duty of One Shilling for each Knee—the same to be paid before shipment, and a Permit for that purpose obtained from the Collector of lmpost, or other Officer of the Customs or Excise, to whom the duty is paid.
[The Penalty for not complying]: besides the forfeiture of the knees, [they shall] forfeit and pay a sum not exceeding Fifty Ponds to Her Majesty, and Her Majesty’s Collectors shall have power to seize any such Juniper Knees, so put on board any ship, vessel or boat for exportation and also the ship, vessel or boat in which the same are laden, and to sell the same and pay the balance of the amount realized into the Treasury, deducting and retaining thereof, as a remuneration to himself one-third thereof.
